Word Limit: Currently Entered Words countdown not working on IE

My form uses the word limit on some fields which will countdown the words fine in Firefox and IE 9. However if I switch my IE to compatibility mode the "currently entered words" section always says 0. If I hit submit (and there is an error on the form) it then refreshes and displays the correct amount of words entered in the field.
Could I get some assistance in correcting this?
All of the fields using this setting are affected however if you wanted to review one of the fields that is a problem is "BACKGROUND OF YOUR ORGANIZATION"
My form is http://jlfoundation.ca/application_form_oct2012.html
Is there a work around so that this feature works regardless of version of IE and/or if IE is in compatibility mode? Perhaps there is some javascript conflict?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

This seems to be a bug with IE7 or older. Please contact us directly and we'll send you the fix for this.
